Symantec's investment in mobile app management extends the typical Mobile Device Management (MDM) policy functionality to secure "Sealed" corporate apps and content on user BYOD devices. The overall strategy is targeted at a serious corporate pain point and could represent a strong market differentiator if the content of these Symantec Sealed apps could be preserved, collected and processed by Clearwell or EV.

Symantec seems to be coming out of their reorganization fog and has even made strategic IG hires. They now have the opportunity to make up lost Clearwell momentum with their channel partners and corporate sales if they can present a unified IG/eDiscovery solution with a license structure that appeals to the market.

Symantec / Clearwell provides a wide portfolio of software, appliance and cloud offerings to address information archiving, collection, preservation, processing, ECA, review, and production for corporations. The Symantec acquisition of Clearwell is now over a year old and sales from this division have been disappointing, according to the company’s Q2 2012 earnings call. The theory had always been that if Symantec could augment the search/export component of its Enterprise Vault Suite (Discovery Accelerator) with the warm, fuzzy interface and easier-to-use transparent search of Clearwell, it could be a very attractive solution. We have seen evidence of compelling product integration, but that has not yet translated into sales numbers. Some of that could be due to culture clash between the sales organizations, a common event in these types of large-scale acquisitions. This coming year will be a very telling one in determining whether this acquisition should be deemed a success or failure.
