IBM's $1.2 billion investment in the new IBM Watson Group includes a new focus on natural language capabilities and analytics. This represents an old school academic style research investment that can produce technology advances that leapfrog the market. Most tech companies do not have the resources for dedicated, pure research on this scale. These kinds of language analytics will be key to adapting machine learning and conceptual profiling to real information governance and eDiscovery challenges.

In the September / October 2013 timeframe, eDJ has received multiple complaints from IBM customers about products and working with the company in general. It strikes us that there may be some pains in integrating the PSS and StoredIQ acquisitions and that IBM has had a tough time selling a lighter-weight version of Atlas.

IBM is a respected software provider. The company bought PSS Systems and still sells the Atlas Legal Hold product, which is one of the leading providers in terms of preservation functionality. IBM has not yet parlayed the strengths of Atlas into huge eDiscovery business for other products like collection and ECA. The company still needs to do some product rationalization. IBM has the tools to get into the predictive coding game, but has not yet gone there. It is perhaps indicative of a wait-and-see approach by the company, which would like benefit more from acquiring a leading provider rather than investing organically. (Editor’s Note: On December 19, 2012, IBM announced its intent to acquire StoredIQ)
