Since the acquisition by Dell, EMC has shifted focus away from the highly competitive eDiscovery market to IG or enterprise file intelligence on their offerings. Dell expects to close on sale of EMC IG assets to OpenText soon.

EMC sees Kazeon as supporting both proactive information governance and reactive eDiscovery use cases. Most of the business is coming from North America and the company reports that 60% of the business is repeat business. From eDJ’s perspective, the Kazeon product has mostly kept up feature/function wise (if only from a “checkbox” perspective) with the exception of predictive coding. It will be interesting to see if scalability and usability improves with the latest version’s 64-bit architecture. While the product has kept up feature/function wise, eDJ has still not encountered customers willing to rave about experience with Kazeon. We will be watching closely to see what kinds of improvement exist in the latest version, as EMC reported some major customer wins in recent months. EMC faces stiff competition in two areas – from the big competitors like IBM that lead the way with Legal Hold (Atlas) and from smaller vendors with similar products to Kazeon, but that have more market momentum (e.g. Nuix). The challenge for EMC will be to remain competitive in both sides of the market. The key to that competitiveness will be the customer feedback on the Kazeon v4.7 release from November 2012.
