kCura has tremendous momentum and is building a good reputation as a review tool, especially in the law firm market. Because the product uses three different search indexes, there is the potential for each to return different results on complex Boolean clauses according to feedback from some who have tested the product. While the use-case for such a scenario is not very likely to occur, it is an issue to be aware of. The company’s introduction of a new processing engine may cause some tension in its channel, and KCura seems to be aware of that and treading lightly. Processing license split is currently 81% enterprise and 19% channel; so some channel partners are adopting. The company’s TAR offering requires the use of Content Analyst’s technology and carries a higher cost (the analytics are the higher cost, so TAR is essentially free once you have the analytics package). Relativity 8 adds email threading, near-dupe, and language identification. Because kCura has built out a good, sizable channel, it is positioned to succeed in the law firm market whether law firms take review tools in-house or use managed services. Whether or not Relativity can dominate the corporate market is a question mark at this point.
